The reserve is classified as a specially protected area of Mediterranean interest.
The reserve includes the marine part of 4 Corsican municipalities Bonifacio, Figari, Monacia d’Aullene and Porto Vecchio.
It covers a marine surface of about 80,000 hectares in the Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia, plus the southern part of the Corsican Sea and a small part of the Tyrrhenian Sea included in the municipalities of Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio.
